Jail for driver who caused death of teen college student

Jamie May, 24, was sent to prison today by a judge at Leeds Crown Court over a crash in which Hannah Hunter, 16, of Havercroft, was killed.

The court heard that May was driving at more than 80mph in a 60mph zone when his car left the road and hit a tree on Chevet Lane, Notton, on October 1 last year.

Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy student Hannah, who the court heard was popular and fun-loving and wanted to work with children, died in the crash.

May, of Crescent Road, Havercroft, and two other passengers were seriously injured.

In court today, May pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and one count of fraud by not disclosing a previous driving ban and penalty points when he took out insurance on his car.

Judge Neil Clark sentenced him to five years and three months in prison. May was also banned from driving for seven years.
