June is new Mayor of Wakefield

Featherstone councillor June Cliffe MBE has been appointed as the Mayor of Wakefield.

The mayor-making ceremony took place at Wakefield County Hall on Thursday.

And Coun Cliffe took the chains of office replacing Coun Sandra Pickin, who has been mayor for the past year.

Coun Cliffe became a councillor in 2012 and has been involved in voluntary work in and around Sharlston for more than 50 years.

Her tireless work was recognised by the Queen when she was awarded an MBE in 2013.

She is known for her involvement with Girl Guiding UK, running a local playgroup and other community work.

Coun Cliffe is also a long serving member of Sharlston Parish Council.

Her husband Jack will be her consort for the mayoral year and her daughter Samantha Buet has been appointed mayoress.

The deputy mayor and mayoress will be Coun Harry Ellis, ward councillor for Knottingley since 2010, and his wife Janet.

Wakefield Council leader Coun Peter Box congratulated Coun Cliffe and Coun Ellis and wished them well for their term of office.

He said: “I am sure they will represent the district with dignity and commitment and I hope they enjoy their year in civic office.”

Coun Cliffe’s chosen charity is the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

A number of local charities including those who help children with meningitis will also receive a share of the money raised during the year.
