Labour have held the Wakefield West council seat after a by-election was held.

Michael Paul Graham was voted in last night in the election, called after Labour’s Ryan Case stood down as a councillor.

Mr Case was the district’s first ever Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender champion, taking up the position in 2016.

In the by-election Mr Graham got 1,118 votes, beating second place Tory Dawn Lesley Hunt. Wakefield Council said the turn-out was 20.6 per cent.

Also standing were Paul Phelps, of the Yorkshire Party, and Liberal Democrat Peter John Williams.
