Football's loss was photography's gain.

Steven Wood, 35, took up the less arduous hobby of photography in 2012 because of a broken knee.

He said: “I had always seemed to have an interest in cameras from my early teens but never did anything more serious than snapshots.”

He started off with a small camera but soon traded it in for a Nikon DSLR. He began learning the ropes himself and watched Internet tutorials.

Mr Wood, of Lupset, added: “I joined a couple of online forums to try and get a bit of constructive critique but I felt I was missing something, and that was the face to face aspect of speaking to other photographers. I joined Wakefield Camera Club in the first week of 2013 and have been a member since. The club has a varied programme which includes some great photographic speakers and technical evenings. There are also a good number of competitions throughout the year. In the last year I’ve seen my images scoring more consistently which resulted in me winning the annual open print competition at the back end of 2015. It was a portrait of my son showing off his new school uniform.”

He added: “A good deal of my work is landscape based. However, I really enjoy photographing live bands, sports, nature and architecture.”

Now he is hoping to climb even higher up the photographic ladder by striving for a Licentiate award from the Royal Photographic Society. To see more of Mr Wood’s pictures go to/www.facebook.com/SAWPhotographic/.
