Lay-bys to be removed on A1 to improve safety

The Highways Agency said the project will improve safety for drivers and take around six-months to complete.

Tim Calvert, Highways Agency project manager, said: “By removing these laybys we will improve safety on the A1 between Redhouse and Darrington. The lay-bys are not designed to current safety standards and slow-moving HGVs accessing or exiting the lay-bys cause disruptions to traffic flows.

“There are a number of alternative locations along this stretch of the A1 for drivers to take free rest periods, with service areas located at Blyth, Darrington, Barnsdale Bar and Ferrybridge.”

The work will take place overnight between 8pm and 6am.

During the night time work lane one and hard shoulder will be closed, the affected lay-bys will remain coned off throughout the scheme.
