Layla’s double gold medal haul in Samoa

The St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School pupil won the 100m and 200m breaststroke at the event last month.

Layla, 15, was chosen to swim for Team GB after breaking the British record in the 100m breaststroke earlier this year.

As well as her two gold medals she also won silver in the 4x100m medley relay and a bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

Layla, who is also preparing for her GCSE exams next summer, said: “It was really good competing in Samoa.

“We had a training camp in New Zealand for a week and then we competed in Samoa for a week.”

Layla trains every day before and after school and is a member of the City of Leeds Swimming Club.

Her Commonwealth Games success comes after she won two bronze medals at the European Championships in Azerbaijan in June.

She said: “It can be hard juggling school work around swimming but I really enjoy it.

“School helps me and my friends are always really helpful and let me look at their notes.

“My parents are a massive help as well because they run me around all over the country to train and compete.”

Layla will now take part in a Team GB training camp in Japan in December.

She will then compete in the British Swimming Championships in April with the aim of securing a qualifying time for the Team GB Olympic squad for Rio 2016.

Layla said: “Swimming is what I want to do and my dream is to compete at the Olympics in Rio next year.

“It might be too soon for me just yet but there is always 2020.”
