From London to Paris in three days ... on a bike

A father and son from Altofts will cycle nearly 300 miles from London to Paris to raise money for Leeds based children’s cancer charity Candlelighters.

Eric Shackleton, 56, and son Benjamin, 19, will ride with Eric’s work colleagues, through the UK countryside to the ferry at New Haven, across the channel to Dieppe and then through France to the Eiffel Tower.

Mr Shackleton said: “We are quite enthusiastic about it. We have been out on the bikes most nights and weekends training and are doing some fundraising sessions on static bikes across Yorkshire.

“The bigger charities get millions and we wanted to help a smaller local charity.

“My wife’s father passed away last month of cancer but it affects everybody in some shape or form.

“It is especially sad that it affects children and some don’t reach adulthood and I think that’s why people have been giving so generously to help us help Candlelighters.”

The group will leave the London Eye at 6am on September 10 and plan to arrive in Paris on September 12.
