M1 near Wakefield to be closed overnight

Motorists face delays as work to upgrade the M1 near Wakefield to a ‘smart motorway’ continues.

The £120m Highways Agency project aims to reduce congestion and increase capacity between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse.

As part of the works, the southbound carriageway between junctions 39 and 40 will be closed overnight on Tuesday, July 14 and Wednesday, July 15.

It will also be closed between junctions 41 and 42 from Thursday, July 16 until Saturday, July 18.

The northbound carriageway will be closed between junction 41 and 42 on Saturday, July 18.

There are also a number of slip-road closures which include:

- The northbound entry slip road at junction 40 will be closed overnight on Tuesday, July 14.

- The southbound entry slip road at junction 41 and the southbound exit slip road at junction 40 will be closed overnight on Friday, July 17.

- The northbound entry slip road at junction 40 will be closed overnight on Friday, July 17.

- The northbound entry slip road at junction 41 will be closed overnight on the Sunday, July 19.

All of the closures will be in place from 8pm to 6am.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place.

The ‘managed motorway’ project will see hard shoulders become permanent lanes in both directions, between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse.

Speed limits will also be varied depending on the amount of traffic and will be displayed on overhead signs and on verges.

It is due to be complete by September.
