M62 congestion-busting scheme to be complete by end of March

Work to reduce congestion on the M62 near Pontefract is expected to be finished by the end of the month.

The Highways Agency has been carrying out the scheme between junction 30 at Rothwell and junction 32 at Castleford since January 2014.

The scheme - part of the government’s £317m national ‘pinch point’ programme - will include new CCTV cameras and automatic traffic monitoring between junction 30 at Rothwell and junction 32 at Pontefract.

Data will then be sent to the Highways Agency’s regional control centre in Wakefield which will be able to apply temporary speed limits on new electronic signs which will also be installed.

Roger Wantling, Highways Agency service delivery team leader, said: “Last week saw a significant milestone, we have been able to remove the 50 mph speed limit and now all outstanding work will take place overnight, using lane closures only, with work to be finished by the end of March.

“Once complete, road users will notice reduced congestion and journey times between M62 junctions 30 to 32. This will be beneficial for the local economies and also improve safety for drivers.”
