Anthony Robert Padgett subsequently told a probation officer he had little recollection of his actions on the evening of October 3 last year because he had taken the drug Mcat.

Christopher Moran prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court the 19-year-old victim only became aware of Padgett around 10.45pm when his attacker suddenly ran up from behind in George Street and punched him in the face.

He was then pushed to the ground and punched a further three to four times to his back and shoulder as Padgett tried to pull his bag away from him.

His attacker only stopped when a woman passer-by saw what was happening and called out she was going to call the police.

Mr Moran said the same witness saw Padgett the next day and called the police. His victim was left with a “nasty” cut above his eye.

The court heard Padgett had an attempted robbery and assault among his previous convictions.

Padgett, 20 formerly of Westgate, admitted assaulting the teenager with intent to rob him.

Judge Geoffrey Marson QC said he had a “terrible record” warning him: “A court is going to pass an extended sentence or a sentence of life in prison if you continue.”

He added: “This was at night, under the influence of drugs and on licence. Having punched his victim in the face, pushed him to the ground and punched him again while demanding his bag.

“He suffered a nasty and unpleasant injury and this was no doubt a frightening experience for your victim which will live long in his memory.”
