Market is up and running at new home

An Easter weekend celebration marked the launch of Hemsworth market in its new location.

Traders welcomed visitors to their stalls, pitched at the new site in the town centre precinct on Saturday.

The official opening was declared at 10.30am and family entertainment including balloon modelling, face painting, a birds of prey display and brass band performances took place throughout the rest of the day.

Coun Tony Upson, chairman of Hemsworth Town Council, said: “The market was opened in its new location by Coun Melonie Burnell.

“There were both indoor and outdoor stalls for people to browse and buy from.

“Footfall was good throughout the day despite the cool weather.”

Hemsworth Town Council hope the central location will help boost trade to the market from passing shoppers as well as attracting more visitors to the town.

Coun Upson added: “We have been aiming to relocate the market to the town centre for a long while to take advantage of the influx of people that the stores now attract.

“The major footfall in Hemsworth is now on the shopping precinct and adjacent areas.

“I would like to ask everyone to spare a few minutes when they leave the stores to visit Hemsworth Market in its new location on the precinct.

“There will be outdoor and indoor stalls to enable the market to continue as a focal point, now set where it belongs, in the heart of our community.

“Hemsworth Town Council would like to thank Home Bargains for allowing use of the precinct, Wakefield Council for the assistance given to the town council in the market relocation and local resident Carol Dawson for her tireless efforts to make this a success.”

The new market will run from 8am until 4pm on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.
