Masked armed robbers raid food store

Masked armed robbers wielding a knife and a hammer stole cash during a raid on a South Elmsall convenience store.

Police said three men entered the Co-operative food store in Ash Grove at around 8.50pm on Thursday and threatened staff before stealing money from the store’s safe and till.

The masked men went into the back office with a male assistant and ordered a female shop worker to open the safe.

After the safe was opened the men took the cash from both the safe and till.

Police said the suspects, who were carrying a knife and a hammer, then fled in the direction of Ash Grove J & I School.

Det Insp Tim Hunt, from Wakefield District CID, said: “This was clearly a very upsetting incident for both members of staff who were understandably very shocked but thankfully uninjured.

“This incident took place whilst people were in the shop, and nearby take-aways were busy so we believe the suspects will have been seen by a number of people as they entered and left the store.

“I would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious between 8.30pm and 9.30pm to get in touch.”

Police said the men were wearing all black clothing with hats and balaclavas over their faces.
