Memories of a white rose

I ENJOYED reading David H Bond’s letter about the meaning of Yorkshire Day (Express letters Aug 11).

I was never fully aware of the meaning of Yorkshire Day, indeed I never knew of its existence until a few years ago, when I saw a neighbour, Bill Hodgson, who lived on the Vale Estate in Knottingley, handing out white roses from his garden to passers by. I believe I was the only one he gave a silk rose to. I still have that rose, wrapped in white tissue paper and I still think of this nice man whenever I look at it.

I never knew of the military significance though, but perhaps Bill Hodgson did, hence his lovely floral tributes.
