I AM writing to thank the many people from Pontefract who sent their condolences following the death of my uncle, Christopher Deighton, a native of the town who had lived over here in Australia since 1991.
Formerly of Wakefield Road, Chris died suddenly at the age of 58 back in January, while he was studying for a PhD at the University of Newcastle, New South Wales.
In Pontefract, he attended the King’s School from 1968 to 1971, after which he attended the universities of Bangor, Essex and Hull as well as the London School of Economics.
He was a dedicated social worker and was involved with Portobello Wakefield Action for Youth, Barnardo’s in Tadcaster, Dalziel of Wooler and the Wakefield Citizens’ Advice Bureau.
Chris left behind three children, Hannah, Christopher and Jordan, his mother, Eilleen, and sister, Carol, as well as extended family in Sydney, England and Spain.
It has been gratifying to know that so many people remember him after more than 20 years away from Pontefract and we appreciate their kind thoughts.
