The South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust plans to redevelop the inpatient wards, Trinity and Priory, and the psychiatric intensive care unit, Chantry, at Fieldhead Hospital.

The work will enable patients to benefit from purpose-built therapeutic rooms, en-suite bathrooms and improved patient relaxation areas to help aid their recovery.

The trust’s chief executive Steven Michael said: “I am delighted that work will soon begin on this significant redevelopment, which is part of our future plans to continue improving services for people who need them the most.

“The new, modern therapy rooms will help us to provide creative activities for each person that we care for helping their recovery.”

The redevelopment will also include modernising visitor areas, improving reception facilities and creating a better environment for staff.

The project is expected to be completed in 2018.

Coun Pat Garbutt, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for adults and health, said: “This investment is fantastic news for the district.

“With one in four people experiencing mental health problems at some point in their life, the transformation of the facilities offered at the site will greatly improve the services the NHS and the council can offer.

“Support for mental health services is one of our key priorities and this redevelopment will bring new facilities to people in the district.”

Wakefield MP Mary Creagh said: “This is great news for local mental health provision and disability services.

“This injection of funds will make a huge difference to people who rely on these services. I can’t wait to see the new buildings take shape.”
