Minikin strikes late against old team to clinch Castleford win

A young Castleford Tigers team edged to a narrow victory in the club’s second pre-season warm-up game away to York City Knights.

The Tigers, who included eight under 19s players in their line-up, came from 12 points down to win 20-16 at Bootham Crescent.

They made a poor start when conceding a try after just four minutes, the experienced Mike Emmett diving over after going through a gap in the Cas defence.

York then soon added a second score as a grubber kick caught out the Tigers defence and their former player, Brad Hey, pounced to touch the ball down. With a second conversion added by Richard Wilkinson it was 12-0.

Cas eased their way into the contest and were rewarded when new signing Jy Hitchcox, playing on the wing, crossed in the corner following a decent handling move.

Centre Greg Minikin was held up over the line to be prevented from scoring against the club he has just joined Castleford from. But youngster Conor Fitzsimmons did score soon after coming on as a replacement, diving over from close range for a try converted by another of the new boys, Ryan Hampshire, to make it 12-10 at half-time.

Cas started the second half well as Hitchcox sent another of the under 19s, Pat Diskin, over in the corner.

York-born Ash Robson took over kicking duties and added the two points to give the Tigers a 16-12 lead.

York looked to hit back and had several chances only to be stopped by some impressive last ditch Tigers tackling.

Cas went close through Davey Dixon as he was forced into touch inches short of the line.

York levelled the score at 16-16 five minutes from time as James Morland crossed the line, too far out for the conversion to be added.

But it was Castleford’s ex-York man Minikin who came up with a late winning try for his new team with a well taken effort.
