A modern way of telling the city's Mystery Plays at cathedral

Rehearsals have begun for The Wakefield Mysteries '“ an adaption of ancient plays written in the city.

Between August 11-20, it will be performed as two separate multimedia productions – Part I: The Fall and Rise and Part II: The Price of Love.

The Theatre Royal Wakefield production will take place in and around the city’s cathedral, and rehearsals started at the Mechanics’ Theatre on Wood Street this week.

Executive director Katie Town said:“The first day of rehearsals is always a very special moment.

“We bring together individuals and watch them start to form into a company. From the very first read-through, it is clear this version of The Wakefield Mysteries is very relevant to political and world events happening now.”

It will be a modern day re-telling of the Wakefield Mystery Plays – penned by the city’s guilds in the middle ages to tell the story of the Bible – and will include rolling news, rap battles and poetry slams.

Actors from the city and the surrounding areas have been cast.
