Morrisons support teen’s mental health project

The fresh department at Morrisons distribution centre has transformed spare warehouse space into games rooms for staff to enjoy.

The unusual change means the team, based at Kenmore Road close to Junction 41 of the M1, can raise money through its 50p per-go-scheme to give to community projects in the area.

And it has already donated £300 to help the Angel of Youths project, a group of teenagers supporting young people with mental health problems.

Pam Abbott, a team manager in the department, said: “We started doing out the community area in March and this is the first donation that we have made.

“We received a letter from the teenagers about the project they were working on to raise awareness of mental health issues in young people, and decided it was something we wanted to support.

“The new scheme is our way of putting something back into the community and that is something we are wanting do more of through our new Morrisons Charity Community Engagement Forum.”

Two of the teenagers visited the warehouse last week where they were presented with the money by Miss Abbott and general manager Mark Downing.

Rebecca Holden, 17, said: “We came up with the project as part of our National Citizens Service scheme. Some of our group had dealt with mental health issues and we planned several events including a battle of the bands to raise awareness of the different mental health conditions and to try to reduce stigma.

“We are incredibly grateful that Morrisons decided to support the project.”
