Noble Waste Treatment was served with a legal notice by the Environment Agency to remove some of the rubbish held on Thornes Lane Wharf before November 27 but failed to comply.

The agency has now partially suspended the company’s environmental permit, meaning no more waste can be taken onto the site until some of the existing pile is removed.

Noble Waste Treatment now has six weeks to take action.

Claire Dickinson, environment management team leader at the Environment Agency, said: “The Environment Agency has taken action against Noble Waste Treatment to prevent the waste from posing a risk to the environment and the local community.

“The company has accumulated too much waste on its premises and it must now take action to reduce the pile. Until this happens we will not allow them to bring any more waste onto the site. We will monitor the company’s progress closely over the coming weeks.”

The firm was unavailable for comment.

Anyone with any further problems regarding the site is asked to call the agency on 0800 807060.
