Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett is holding an event to raise awareness of bogus callers, fraudsters and doorstep crime.

He is working alongside West Yorkshire Trading Standards to launch the “safer project” in the Wakefield district.

Recent figures have shown 14.5m people are targeted by scammers and cold callers each year and 2.5m fall victim.

Mr Trickett said: “I hope we can raise awareness of bogus callers, doorstep criminals and fraudsters, so we can avoid our older people becoming prey to rogue traders.

“It will, hopefully, also increase their confidence to say no to doorstep callers.”

David Lodge, head of West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service, said: “The safer project enables us to work closely with the older and more vulnerable residents ensuring that education becomes the prevention.”

The event will take place from 2pm on Friday, February 27 in the conference room, Moorthorpe railway station, Barnsley Road.

It is open to older people or their carers. To book a place call Mr Trickett’s office on 01977 655695.
