MP bids to help deliver Wakefield Wildcats stadium

Proposals were drawn up for the club to move to a new 12,000 capacity stadium as part of a new 100-acre business park on Newmarket Lane in Stanley.

But a crash in the economy sidelined the plans and no work has since been done on the proposed stadium.

Miss Jenkyns met with Wildcats chairman Michael Carter and Stadium Wakefield Action Group member Phil Townsend on Friday.

And she said they discussed various options and strategies on how they can help kick start the development.

Miss Jenkyns said: “Wakefield Wildcats and the community stadium mean a lot to a great number of constituents.

“Our sports teams are a huge source of local pride and I see it as my job to support this. I also see the benefits to the economy and job creation.

“I will support the club and other stakeholders in getting the plan back on track. Soon as we will know where Wakefield Council, the Department for Communities and local government and the developer stands, this will determine the next step.”

More than 1,200 fans have backed the FightforNewmarket Facebook campaign calling for work to start on the new stadium.

Mr Townsend said: “We must continue in our efforts to ensure that justice is done.

“We are open to assist in any negotiations which may ultimately lead to something of mutual benefit to all.”
