Hundreds of new jobs could breathe life back into the former Kellingley Colliery site.
Plans to convert the former mine into a business park have been submitted by developers.
Pontefract and Castleford MP Yvette Cooper said: “Kellingley Colliery was a proud part of our history.
“We all fought hard for years to keep it open and I still strongly believe the government was wrong to let it close.
“But it is really important now to get new good quality jobs on the site.
“Many who lost their jobs at Kellingley were highly skilled.
“That’s why it’s important that the jobs at the new park are also highly skilled, and not just low-skilled and low paid.
“The new site should also mark its historic link to the Kellingley pit in the form of a memorial, so Knottingley’s proud history is not forgotten.”
