Millions of pounds is to be pumped into building a new link road in Pontefract.
Council and transport bosses have announced plans for a £4.1m carriageway from Park Road to Skinner Lane, Monkhill.
Building the 1.5km stretch of road is expected to create hundreds of jobs and alleviate traffic chaos at Town End.
Coun Peter Box, leader of Wakefield Council, said: “We welcome today’s news that the scheme to create the Northern Link Road in Pontefract has successfully received £4.1m from the government’s Pinch Point Fund.
“The new road will unlock housing and development opportunities in Pontefract, help to ease traffic congestion and improve the local transport infrastructure.”
Planning chiefs say work is expected to start next year and is key to unlocking further development at the Prince of Wales Colliery.
