Ms Town, who is originally from Northallerton, has also worked at the Royal Opera House.

She said: “It is a very exciting time to be joining Theatre Royal Wakefield. The theatre is in a very strong position, achieved by the commitment of the dedicated team of staff and an active group of volunteers.

“Having celebrated the theatre’s 120th anniversary it is now time to build on this position and take the theatre into its next 120 years.”

Chair of the board of trustees Dennis Gillibrand welcomed the news of Ms Town’s appointment.
