LICE-riddled and emaciated horses were removed from a field in Castleford by the RSPCA.

Officers from the animal charity and Castleford neighbourhood policing team (NPT) visited a paddock off Wheldon Road after residents contacted them with concerns for the welfare of 11 horses and three rabbits.

After the animals were examined by a vet, PC Alison Kendrick and PC Sarah Vaines helped RSPCA staff remove them from the field. They are now being cared for by the charity, which has launched an investigation.

Sgt Paul Coates, of Castleford NPT, said “This was a sad case of neglect of animals in an area not far from the town centre.

“I’d like to thank the members of public who brought this to our attention. They can be reassured that these animals are now receiving the correct level of care that they deserve.

“The owner of the animals is now under investigation by the RSPCA. If anyone has information about these animals or any other neglect cases the RSPCA can be contacted on 0300 1234999.”
