Organised by the Community Foundation for Wakefield District, the awards honour people who don’t get the recognition they deserve for their community work.

Nominations for the awards closed in March, but the foundation has now announced that it will be taking entries for the new Tim Henman Award. This award is for a young person aged between 12 and 18 who freely gives up their time to help those less fortunate than themselves.

The charity is encouraging anyone who knows a young person worthy of nomination to submit their details, along with a short summary of what they’ve done.

Activities could be in almost any area including sport, disability, mental health or simply befriending. Family circumstances can often lead to young people taking on an adult role in caring for a parent and young people in this situation can also be nominated.

The awards cover the whole of the Wakefield district.

The Unsung Heroes Awards was established last year to celebrate and acknowledge the contribution of those who are rarely, if ever, in the limelight. The event shone the spotlight on some inspirational people, such as Steve Greatorex, from Wakefield Whirlwinds Disabled Basketball Club, who started up a sports group called Able 2 for those with a physical disability.

All the winners will be revealed at a ceremony on Friday, June 8.
