The route, entitled ‘Makers, Miners and Money’, highlights the region’s contribution to the coal, iron and steel industries.

The National Coal Mining Museum, at New Road, Overton, is one of three ‘anchor points’ on the trail along with Barnsley’s Elsecar Heritage Centre and Sheffield’s Kelham Island Museum.

Each anchor point on the new European Route of Industrial Heritage, which also features Kirklees Light Railway and Cannon Hall Museum, is described as a site with “exceptional historical importance.”

To mark the newly-announced trail, the Earl of Fitzwilliam’s 1913 Simplex car journeyed from Kelham Island to Elsecar earlier today.

Dr John Tanner of Barnsley Council, said: “Iron, coal and steel industries thrived from the 1600s to the 20th century and employed many thousands of men, women and children. Our ancestors helped fuel the expansion of the British Empire and the development of the modern world and this new heritage route is an excellent opportunity to remind ourselves just how pivotal their discoveries were.”

The route is one of 15 across the continent linking industrial heritage attractions in Europe.
