New-look golf course is ready

A golf course is set to tee off for the summer - the first full season since it was taken over by a team of dedicated volunteers.

Springmill in Ossett was in danger of closing last year after Wakefield Council axed funding for the nine-hole course, but was saved when a 16-strong team of enthusiasts stepped up in September.

This weekend will see open days from 10am until 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday, April 7 and 8, with competitions and a fun day that includes crazy golf, bouncy castle, face painting, raffle and food and drink.

Linda Price, who helped save the course from closure, said: “The aim of the weekend is to kick-start the golf season and to show people that we are still here and to start using us now that the weather is picking up.

“The course was not in the best condition when we first re-opened but with the help of volunteers and Low Laithes Golf Course the course is improving week by week.

“We have had a lot of support from the public since opening and nothing but praise from golfer and non golfers.

“Golfers are definitely starting to notice the improvements that we have made. A massive effort goes into running the golf course and ‘tee room’.

“We will be looking at installing footgolf onto the course in the near future and install a small driving range.”

The council’s decision to offload the golf course from its budget came as is looked to slash another £15 million.

Others golf facilities that fell victim to the cuts included the pay and play activities at Pontefract Park and also at Thornes Park.
