A CRISIS-hit hospital trust has appointed three non-executive directors to its board following a mass resignation.

Pat Garbutt, Trevor Lake and Rosie Valerio have joined Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Their appointment follows the resignations of Anita Fatchett, David Longstaff, Margaret Faull and Iain Wilkinson on July 3.

They left amid a deepening financial crisis at Mid Yorkshire, which runs Pontefract, Dewsbury and Pinderfields hospitals.

Mid Yorkshire is expected to be £26m in deficit at the end of the year and has missed targets to become a Foundation Trust - an elite status the government is forcing all hospital trusts to achieve or face major reorganisation.

David Stone, the trust’s interim chairman, said two more non-executives would be appointed later in the year.

He said: “We’re delighted to welcome these three new non-executive members to our board.

“They bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience which will be invaluable to us as we tackle our financial and service challenges.”

Pat Garbutt is a Pontefract North councillor and Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for adults and health.

Coun Garbutt said: “I am very pleased to be joining the board and to be in a position to make a difference to local health services.

“The council has long said that the trust needs to change and to change quickly so it can deliver the quality of services people of this district need and expect.

“We want to see the three hospitals to be excellent NHS hospitals, providing excellent services for patients. I will be doing all I can to achieve this.

“I accept we have a lot of work to do and it will be a challenge, but by working with the trust I am sure we can meet that challenge.”

Trevor Lake is an independent member of West Yorkshire Police Authority and a non-executive associate with NHS Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield District.

Rosie Valerio provides employment advice and consultancy to the voluntary sector and is an independent trustee of the University of Sheffield Pension Scheme.
