New uniform policy has more than 400 parents signing online petition

From September, the school insist skirts and trousers should have its logo, meaning the clothes will only be available through their supplier, and parents have accused the school of trying to cash in.

Parent Mel Cossins, launched the petition and said: “There’s a lot of concern about not being consulted and the extra cost.

“It went on Facebook and there were hundreds of comments.

“People have been saying they can get trousers for £5 from Asda, but now they’re going to cost four times as much, just because they’ve got the logo.”

The school says a decision was taken after talks between the local governing body and student council, and insist no profit will be turned.

A statement from the school reads: “We are keen to ensure greater consistency in what is acceptable both in terms of skirt length and trouser style.

“Our uniform changes are part of our new ‘Standards for Success’ initiative to bring about heightened expectations on students and their uniform that sit alongside those that are expected in the workplace.

“We have followed the Department for Education guidance around affordability and offer free uniform packs for all students who qualify, and where applicable assistance for families who have more than one child at Horbury Academy.

“We are continuing to work with uniform suppliers to secure the best possible prices for parents and carers, and are exploring further styles of both trousers and skirts.”
