Pontefract and Sandal castles will be closed on New Year’s Day.

The council’s waste recycling centres will also be closed on January 1 but will be open as normal on all other dates as normal.

Normal opening hours will resume at all services and facilities on Monday, January 5.

Joanne Roney, the council’s chief executive, said: “We have looked into how these facilities are used over these days and found the usage to be very low.

“So we have decided to close non-essential services again this year and save money on overheads like heating and lighting.

“We are dedicated to ensure essential services will be maintained for those who need them the most.

“We will protect vulnerable people, work to keep roads open in winter weather and collect household waste.”

Most council sports and leisure centres across the district will be closed on New year’s Day with normal opening hours resuming on Friday, January 2.
