Nine illegal immigrants found in abbatoir raid

Officers from the Home Office visited the Al-Ummah Halal Poultry chicken abattoir at Old Colliery Farm, Main Street, at 2.45am on Wednesday, July 10, and carried out checks on staff arriving for work.

Eight Pakistani men were arrested on suspicion of overstaying their visas. Another 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of being a failed asylum seeker from Afghanistan.

Two of the men from Pakistan were also investigated for the use of forged documents, with one of them, a 34-year-old, charged under section 6 of the Fraud Act. He pleaded guilty at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, July 11, and was remanded in custody. He will be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court in August.

The second man, a 30-year-old, received a conditional caution under section 2 of the Fraud Act and will be detained while steps are taken to deport him. The seven other men remain in detention wile steps are taken to remove them from the UK.
