Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington to host free swimming classes in Wakefield

Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington has organised a free fun day in Wakefield to mark the first anniversary of her swimming school.

Rebecca, who gave birth to daughter Summer in June, has her own Swim Stars programme at the Total Fitness gym at Silkwood Park, Wakefield, for children aged between three and 11.

More than 500 youngsters have been through the classes since they were launched last September and they are so popular that extra sessions are being added.

The funday on Saturday August 8 will consist of three 40 minute sessions with swimming and games at Total Fitness from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

Rebecca, who has won four Olympic medals, believes it is important that youngsters learn how to swim and has already introduced Summer to the pool.

She said: “She first went at three and a half weeks, and she absolutely loved it. She didn’t cry once.

“I think it’s really important for her just to be around the water, have some fun and gain confidence - not just because her mum and dad were professionals.”

Rebecca, who has taken a few months off to concentrate on Summer, said: “I have been delighted with the success of SwimStars in Wakefield.

“I am passionate about teaching young people to swim and everyone who takes part is a success story as far as I am concerned.

“Swim Stars is my company and my passion. I haven’t just lent my name to it.

“I enjoyed the launch in Wakefield and hope to be back very soon to visit the classes.

“In the meantime I hope people will just turn up with their swim gear on the Saturday afternoon and join my teachers for a free taster lesson, followed by some fun and games in the pool.”
