LETTER: Oppose Wakefield and Pontefract Magistrates’ Court closure

I must write to register my concerns about the proposed closure of the Wakefield Magistrates’ Court.

If this is allowed to happen all criminal cases would be heard in Leeds and would mean that anyone connected with a case (this could be victims, witnesses, defendants, solicitors) having to travel into Leeds. It would seem to me that ordinary people who have to access the court would in fact be having to pay for the privilege themselves through the high costs of public transport or for example parking in Leeds.

We are told that ‘access to justice’ is at the heart of the consultation - it appears to me that if the Wakefield Court is allowed to close then justice would be denied to everyone who lives in the Wakefield Metropolitan District.

I write in the hope that readers of the Wakefield Express will join in opposing the closure.
