The five West Yorkshire councils had earlier in the year approved a scheme, prepared by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, to create a mayoral combined authority, to enhance transport links, support employment, training opportunities and business, while tackling climate change.

In July and August people from across the region were asked to give their views on the the deal in a public consultation.

Wakefield Council said the results showed the majority of those who responded support the West Yorkshire deal.

Members of Wakefield’s Cabinet, meeting on September 2, will be asked to comment on West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s latest devolution report and to agree for a summary of the consultation to be submitted to government in September.

The deal will then be considered at a special meeting of council later in the day.

The Leader of Wakefield Council, Coun Denise Jeffery, said: “Thanks to everyone who took the time to take part in the public consultation, it was very important to hear your views to help shape the plans moving forward.

“I firmly believe the £1.8 billion West Yorkshire devolution deal is the right way forward for the district, as it will give us greater decision-making powers on real issues that affect our residents and communities.

“Although more people in Wakefield supported the deal than didn’t, there were a number who were strongly opposed. Clearly people have concerns about the deal – but it is the only deal on the table. And I would like to reassure people we are committed to get the very best deal for Wakefield.

“Devolution will support our plans and ambitions, as we continue to deal with the coronavirus pandemic and plan for the recovery of our economy and our communities. It will be crucial as we shape a recovery that ensures all our communities are supported and strengthened.”

If approved by cabinet, the report will go to full council for consideration. The government will then consider if the deal supports the identities and interests of local communities, and secures effective and convenient local government.

The deal will also see the creation of a West Yorkshire Mayor, to be elected in May 2021.

By becoming a devolved mayoral area, the Wakefield district is best placed to access future funding and powers.

Members of Wakefield’s cabinet are meeting virtually on Wednesday, September 2 at 10.30am. The meeting can be watched live or later on the council’s website.
