Wakefield district Conservative MPs have their say on new national lockdown

Wakefield district Conservative MPs Imran Ahmad Khan and Andrea Jenkyns have spoken out on the government's new lockdown plans.

Wakefield MP Mr Khan said: ‘’This is the hardest decision this Government and Parliament have had to make yet throughout this pandemic.

"I continue to digest and analyse the latest data presented by the Prime Minister and SAGE on Saturday and the countervailing arguments and scientific interpretations.

Morley and Outwood MP Ms Jenkyns said: “After the summer we introduced a regional tier-system, designed to safeguard the health of those in areas with a high infection rate, and the economy of the rest of the country.

"The Government wanted to avoid a new full lockdown as much as possible, as we are all aware of the deep impact on the economy, livelihoods and mental health it has.

"Unfortunately, models of our top scientists suggest that unless we act swiftly, we could see more than twice the deaths of the first wave, in a time of great pressures on the NHS.

"Thankfully, the Government has confirmed that it will support workers with an extension of the furlough scheme at 80 per cent until December, grants of up to £3,000 for premises that are forced to close, and £1.1 billion for local authorities to enable them to support businesses."
