A PLAY about Leeds United superfan Gary Edwards is set for away fixtures of its own – including a stop in Wakefield.

Paint It White tells the story of the Kippax painter and decorator who has followed the Elland Road club through thick and thin – missing just one game since 1968.

The production, which was first staged at Leeds’ Clarence Dock theatre, will start a 15-day nationwide tour at Castleford’s Phoenix Theatre on October 13, before coming to Balne Lane WMC in Wakefield on Friday October 28.

Terrace stalwart Gary said: “I’m delighted Paint It White is returning for a tour of the country and bringing my adventures to a nationwide audience.

“I have got to know many fans from around the country and know it will go down well in a place like Castleford where there are loads of Leeds United fans.”

The play, based on Gary’s book of the same title, follows him as he juggles his passion for the club alongside his everyday life – with experiences including a marriage lasting just weeks and driving to matches in a hearse.

He is played by actor Gary Dunnington, whose CV includes roles in Coronation Street and Casualty.

Paint It White is the first play by Leeds-born producer, writer and ex-BBC journalist Les Rowley.

He said: “The play is about the unbelievable life of a normal bloke, and it is heartwarming to see such a character loved and admired by almost everyone he comes into contact with. You don’t even need to like football to enjoy this play.”
