Pancake Day gifts served up at Wakefield Cathedral

Canon Andi Hofbauer put on a chef’s hat before mastering her flipping technique on the cathedral steps this morning to advertise a Pancake Day offer that was too good to miss.

Catering staff from the cathedral’s Treacy Hall cafe set up an outdoor stall to serve free pancakes, which proved a big hit with shoppers.

Canon Hofbauer said: “We gave pancakes out as a gift to the people of Wakefield and invited them to come back to the cathedral for Ash Wednesday and to take a Lent pledge to bring in spare food tins from their cupboards or to buy a couple of extra tins for us to give to our local foodbanks.”

After tucking into a pancake drizzled with golden syrup, Canon Tony Macpherson, said: “It is a great event. It’s good to see people inside and outside the cathedral that you don’t normally see. It showed that the cathedral is here for everybody.”

Catering assistants Richard Hawksworth, 31, of Crofton and Lynn Turpin, 56, of Outwood, were kept busy serving a snaking queue of customers at the pancake stall. Lynn Turpin said: “It was fun to work outside in the sunshine.”
