Parking permit charges - Wakefield Council to consider new scheme

Plans to introduce charges for existing residential parking permits are part of an overhaul of parking restrictions and fines will go before the council’s cabinet next week.

Coun Denise Jeffery, cabinet member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “Many other authorities already make a charge for a residential parking permit.

“If the council introduced a charge it would help to cover the costs of patrollers, signs, administration and making sure the permits are properly policed.”

The council has also proposed a new system for parking fines which could reduce the rate paid by some drivers.

It wants to bring in charges of £70 for serious offences - reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days.

And less serious offences would carry a £50 fine - reduced to £25 if also paid within 14 days.

Currently, there is a flat rate £45 fine with no discounts.

Other plans include allowing people to use their mobile phones to pay for parking.
