‘Patience is key to new Castleford Tigers’ stadium’

The developers of the proposed Five Towns Park scheme have called for patience as they await a final decision on the £135m scheme.

The development - which would also include a new stadium for Castleford Tigers - would be built on land just off junction 32 of the M62.

The planning application was sent to the Department for Communities and Local Government following approval by Wakefield Council in February.

In March, government ministers and officials issued an Article 25 holding direction which prevents any action being taken on the application while the department considers whether or not it needs to intervene.

In an open letter to Castleford Tigers’ supporters, Philip Lunn, managing director of developer Lateral Property Group, said: “We believe Five Towns Park will be viewed positively by the new government, because it can help to deliver prosperity, employment, infrastructure and enhanced community cohesion.

“However, we now need to be patient to allow the new government time to make their decision.”

The plans include a 10,000-capacity stadium as well as a new food store, petrol station, high-quality shops and a country park on land between Stainburn Avenue and Spittal Hardwick Lane.

It would create around 1,950 full-time jobs and contribute around £7m to the economy.

Mr Lunn said: “We are confident that we have made a very strong case for Five Towns Park throughout the planning process.

“It is wholly reasonable for the government to have sought more time to consider and make recommendations.

“However, we sincerely hope that Five Towns Park will be seen as a very important planning application for the new Secretary of State to consider as soon as possible.

“We are confident that we have made a very strong case for Five Towns Park throughout the planning process. We have the advantage of having very substantial local support and the unanimous planning decision made by Wakefield Council.”
