Hampers full of the chocolate treats were taken a fortnight ago after two thieves entered the town hall on Headland Lane and walked away with the goodies.

The pair were even caught on CCTV walking into the building and possible names of the suspects were handed to police.

The hampers were to be raffled off by Kristina Gelder School of Dance to help send the young pupils to Disneyland Paris, where they are due to perform later in the year.

But after a rallying call was sent out, Kristina was overwhelmed by the response.

Kristina Gelder said: “Abbi Jones from Wakefield District Housing (WDH) called and said they were going to help but I didn’t realise there as going to be so many, they brought all of these bags of eggs to my door.

“It was a fantastic effort - we probably had more in the end than we had to start with.

“I’d just have to say a really big thank you to everyone for the community spirit they’ve shown. It’s a testing time for everyone at the minute so for people to do this is fantastic.”

Abbi Jones who is a housing officer for WDH, who annually collects hundreds of Easter eggs for the children of Knottingley in her spare, said: “Our PCSO Aaron Riley put out an email asking if anyone could help after the dance school had its Easter eggs stolen.

“We were happy to help. I’ve only put it out on Facebook and it’s the people who dropped them at our door that need thanking. It shows that we care about where we live.”

The money raised from the dance school’s raffle will now go towards the Disney trip, which was planned for August but looks likely to be postponed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
