Dog grooming in Wakefield: Council clarifies what the national lockdown restrictions mean for city's dog groomers

Dog groomers are permitted to remain open, providing that the grooming is necessary for the purposes of the animal’s welfare and not for aesthetic purposes.

This means that grooming should only take place to prevent or alleviate suffering, pain, injury or disease.

If the council receives a complaint that grooming is taking place for reasons other than the welfare of the animal, the business must be able to demonstrate that the grooming was necessary for the welfare of the animal.

Coun Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Communities and Poverty, said: “Dog owners and groomers should consider, on a case by case basis, whether the service is necessary to prevent the animal suffering from pain, injury or a disease developing.

“We understand that the national restrictions are likely to affect dog groomers’ routine business and income. We have a dedicated website page where they can see what help and support is available to them through this difficult time.”
