Flats proposal for city centre building withdrawn

The application to convert the upper floors of Marygate House, at the top of Westgate, had been sent to Wakefield Council’s planning department a the end of January but has since been withdrawn.

The applicant, which is listed as IP Marygate House Ltd, had intended to create a mix of studio and one-bedroom flats, and three two-bedroom flats all spread across three of the upper floors of the building.

The ground floor is currently occupied by a series of retail businesses, including a barbers, off-licence, jewellers, tobacconists, and fast-food takeaway shop.

No indication has been made as to why the application has been withdrawn, but the plans did draw some criticism.

One objector felt 27 flats was too many, while another person raised a point about the toilets for the ground floor shops being situated on the first floor, which formed part of the plans.
