Though current Covid-19 restrictions mean the shelter cannot operate as normal, staff and volunteers will remain available for those in need.

In a notice on its website, Wakefield Council said: "Historically during periods of severe cold weather, the Council has funded Wakefield Baptist Church to open a night shelter for anyone sleeping rough in the district.

"Unfortunately this year the shelter will not be able to open but alternative accommodation can be offered.

"Wakefield Baptist Church will continue to alert partner organisations when this provision is available and how to access the service."

Staff and volunteers are working with Wakefield Council to provide Covid-secure shelter for rough sleepers tonight.

Anyone in need is invited to attend the shelter at Wakefield Baptist Church, on Belle Isle Avenue, between 7pm and midnight.

Staff will then be able to organise transport to a Covid-secure hotel nearby.
