Volunteer Rob said: “Back in June 2016 I lost my Dad to the horrible disease that is cancer.

“A disease that has touched so many of us in so many horrendous ways.

“In the final months I watched the mountain of a man that I always looked upon my Dad as being, reduced to nothing more than a mole hill, such was the way the cancer took hold.

“In his last week or so he was transferred to the hospice. To use words to describe somewhere that treats terminally ill people as wonderful and amazing seems an odd thing to do, but they are perfectly apt for the hospice.

“From the moment my Dad arrived they could not do enough either for him or us, whether we needed a doctor or nurse to talk to, a room to go and cry or just a cup of tea, nothing was ever too much trouble.

“The work the staff do on a daily basis is nothing short of miraculous and they never wilt or fail to provide support regardless of the form that takes.

“In his last hours, the nurses and staff made sure that we were kept fully informed and up to date on what was happening, again with the utmost compassion and respect.

“I will always remember when the nurses came in to confirm that he had gone, there was a young nurse who was also visibly upset.

“Places like the hospice make the passing of loved ones as comfortable as possible and it is the members of staff there, the unsung heroes that make that possible.

“It would be an absolute travesty if the hospice were to ever close, so please, continue to support them with whatever you can no matter how small.”

Our hospice helps people live better with their illness, with around half who stay with us eventually returning home.

Many choose the safety and dignity of our hospice for care at the end of their life. This care is given 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

However, 2020 is a leap year, meaning we are providing care for 366 days, and we need to find an extra £7,660 to cover the additional day’s costs.
