Huge Christmas tree knitted by Wakefield Community Crafters stands proud in The Ridings Shopping Centre

A 20-foot Christmas tree has been unveiled at The Ridings Shopping Centre that has been knitted by Wakefield Community Crafters group.

Dozens of group members hand knitted 1500 squares to create the festive tree.

It took the team around 475 hours to complete the hand made tree and members of the community can now enjoy its beauty while shopping in the city centre.

Anna Howard, founder of Wakefield Community Crafters said: "It is a tree for the community made by the community.

"I was difficult towards the end as due to Tier 3 being in place only my support bubble could finish the tree which left three of us to finish knitting it all together.

"We have also sewn on rainbows in memory of our friend Betty Whitley, 1936 - 2020."
