A popular children's playground in Normanton has reopened following a £50,000 makeover - with new swings, springies and play equipment in place.

Walnut Park play area is now home to two new multi-play units, swings, springies, roundabout and all new safety surfacing.

The project has been supported by local ward councillors Elaine Blezard an dDavid Dagger, as well as the council's street scene services.

It follows an £80,000 makeover at a park in Lupset last month.

Councillor Jack Hemingway, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change, said: “The new improved play area looks amazing and will be great for families and young people.

“This a fantastic example of how the community, local councillors and the Council can work together and access funding from private housing developments to improve life for local people.”

The project has been supported by local ward councillors and is jointly funded by Local Capital Grants and Section 106 monies.

The Local Capital Grants programme sees £50,000 allocated, annually, to each of the Council’s 21 wards to fund projects that will improve the lives of local residents.

Contributions can be sought from developers under Section 106 towards the costs of providing community and social infrastructure.
