The officer posted a response to the note on Twitter that was left on the windscreen of his patrol car after he stopped off at a Tesco, saying "£100 fine for shopping on duty."

The officer, known as @NorthWestCop, said: "Just left Tesco. Handwritten note on the windscreen of my patrol car. '£100 fine for shopping on duty'. If only I could tell the person who wrote it that I have just spent the last 7 hours at the sudden death of a baby. I'd bought a sandwich. We're not robots. #BeKind #WoundUp"

The officer's response received hundreds of comments in support of the police and the work they, and all the emergency services, do.

One said: "People think duty means no food, no toilet time and no diverting!!!"

Another said: "People only see what they want to see unfortunately. You shouldn’t have to justify your actions but situations like this make you feel you need to. I hope you’re ok after such a tough day."

Another tweeted: "General public, should always let emergency services ahead in the queue. Thank you to you and your colleagues for what you do to keep us all safe."

Other comments included: "Maybe the person who wrote this will see this on Twitter and feel suitably ashamed. No one knows what heat wrenching job the emergency services have just been to."

"Some people are just clueless. Sending you a big hug."

And: "A police officer like you took my wife asap at 3am in the morning to our seriously injured child who been involved in a RTA. His words and actions that night brought comfort to us both. Have never forgotten his kindness. You and your colleagues deserve nothing but thanks."
