Prince Philip: Flags to be flown at half mast in Wakefield as councillors lead tributes to Duke of Edinburgh

Political figures across Wakefield have led tributes to the Duke of Edinburgh, who died peacefully at Windsor Castle this morning at the age of 99.

The Union Flag will be flown at half mast on all council buildings until the day after the Prince's funeral, which has not yet been announced.

Additionally, Wakefield Town Hall is to be lit in red, white and blue until Sunday, April 11.

Wakefield's Mayor, councillor Charlie Keith, said: "It is with great sadness that we have received the news that His Royal Highness Prince Philip has today sadly passed away.

“Many tributes will be paid to him in the coming days and weeks and I know that people across the nation, including many people of this district, will be mourning his death.

“I am today writing to the Palace to offer our sincere condolences of behalf of the Council and residents in the district.

“Despite the national restrictions in place, residents are still invited to pay their own respects to Prince Philip by signing our online book of condolence on the Council’s website to make sure that their own tributes are captured and always remembered.”

An online book of condolence has also been opened on the Wakefield Council website, and will remain available until 5pm the day after the funeral.

Coun Denise Jeffery, Leader of Wakefield Council, said: “This is such sad news and our condolences go to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal family.

“His Royal Highness visited the district on a number of occasions and many residents will have fond memories of this.

“It is honourable that His Royal Highness Prince Philip has devoted his life to public service, only retiring from public duties just a few years ago. His work throughout his life will leave a lasting legacy in his name.”
