Prince Philip: Wakefield's MPs pay tribute to 'true gentleman' Duke of Edinburgh

MPs from across the Wakefield district have paid tributes to Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, following his death at the age of 99.

Prince Philip passed away at Windsor Castle this morning, Buckingham Palace confirmed in a statement shortly after midday.

Tributes have poured in to the duke in the hours since the announcement, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson among the first to offer his thoughts to the Queen and Royal Family.

Yvette Cooper, MP for Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford, said: "Prince Philip will be remembered for his lifetime of public service and devotion to the Queen over the seven decades they spent together.

"My thoughts are with the Queen and entire Royal Family at this very sad time."

Imran Ahmad Khan, MP for Wakefield, said: "I am saddened to hear of the passing of HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh.

"The Duke’s life has been characterised by service - to his family and to his country. A dedicated public servant, he served our nation diligently through war and peace.

"May he rest in peace."

In a tweet, Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett said: "Very sad to hear the news about Prince Phillip today. He led an extraordinary life of public service to our country.

"Condolences to the Queen, the Royal Family and all those close to him. Rest in Peace."

And Andrea Jenkyns, MP for Morley and Outwood, said: "I was heartbroken at the news of HRH Prince Philip's passing.

"He committed himself to a lifetime of service to our nation, from fighting in WW2 to supporting our Queen over the many decades. His passion for people was a testament to a life spent in service to the Royal Family, the nation, and the Commonwealth.

"A true gentleman, and a Great Briton. My thoughts, prayers and love to the Queen and the Royal Family.”
